Introduction to Zhenhai in the fourth year of Tang Yuanhe (AD 809), Wanghai Town was built at the mouth of Yongjiang River in Jidong, which was the beginning of the establishment of Zhenhai. In the third year of Kaiping in Houliang (AD 909), Wanghai Town was changed to Wanghai County, and it was later changed to Dinghai County. In the 26th year of Qing Emperor Kangxi (AD 1688), Dinghai County was renamed Zhenhai County.
1984, part of the administrative area of Zhenhai County was zoned, and Ningbo Binhai District was established.
