What kind of victory did Taierzhuang win?
China's army won a great victory in Taierzhuang for the first time, and the people of the whole country were ecstatic, sweeping away the pessimism in the past. Taierzhuang is a small town that the Japanese army must pass through to advance to Xuzhou. Under the command of General Li Zongren, the battle lasted 17 days, with Japanese casualties 16, 40 tanks, 70 armored vehicles, 0/00 cars and many cannons. This is the first fiasco suffered by the Japanese army since modernization. Tang's army was a reinforcement in the war and played well. Stilwell doesn't go to Lanzhou and happens to be with them. But he, like some foreigners who support China, thinks that China has lost its good fighter, instead of pursuing victory. He said to Bai Chongxi, the second chief of staff, "China people will never listen to the idea of launching an attack!" When Stilwell visited Taierzhuang, he talked with Li Zongren. Frankly attacked the idea that defeating the Japanese army rather than chasing it can win, and thought that the future of China and War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression was pessimistic. Li Zongren was deeply moved by the American colonel's point of view. He asked Stilwell to suggest that the American government provide China with a large loan to enable China to buy war materials.
