South China University of Technology is one of the earliest institutions engaged in computer research and teaching in Chinese universities. It started computer science research in 1958 and successfully developed the first analog electronic computer in South China, and then successfully developed the first Russian-Chinese translation machine in China. Computer major was established in 1960, computer science and engineering department in 198 1, and computer science and engineering college in 200 1.

The college has three undergraduate majors: computer science and technology (national major, Guangdong famous brand major and Guangdong key major), network engineering (national major) and information security. The college has a doctoral program in computer science and technology and a Post-Doctoral Research Center in computer science and technology. Computer science and technology is a first-class key discipline in Guangdong Province. The college has Guangdong Key Laboratory of Computer Network, Guangdong Big Data Analysis and Processing Engineering Technology Research Center, Guangdong University Intelligent Information Processing and Security Engineering Technology Research Center for Massive Big Data, Guangdong Computer Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center and other scientific research bases.

There are 94 faculty members, including 73 full-time teachers, including 23 professors and 34 associate professors. The academic team has reasonable age structure and knowledge structure, and has interdisciplinary advantages and strong reserve force. According to the research direction, 10 academic teams have been set up to carry out research in the fields of computer network, multimedia technology, artificial intelligence and information security. In recent years, they have undertaken and participated in national "973", "863", national science and technology support plan, national development and reform commission demonstration project, national natural science foundation and other scientific research projects, and published a number of high-level academic papers. As the main undertaker, the relevant academic team of the College participated in the construction of major projects of China Education and Research Computer Network and China Power Grid, and won the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress for three times.
