Guiyang belongs to the third-tier cities, the third-tier cities are Changzhou, Nantong, Huzhou, Nanchang, Xi'an, Guiyang and other more economically developed along the coast and the river or some of the inland provincial capital cities.

In 2012, the State Council approved the abolition of Huaxi and Xiaohe districts and the establishment of New Huaxi and Guanshanhu districts. The new Huaxi District is the administrative area of the former Huaxi District and Xiaohe District; and Guanshanhu District is formed by the former Wudang District Jinyang Street, Jinhua Township, Zhuchang Township, and Baihuahu Township of Qingzhen City.

In April 2013, the provincial government agreed to abolish the Wudang District Xinchang Township, set up Xinchang Town, the township people's government in Xinchang Village; agreed to abolish the Wudang District Xiaba Township, set up Xiaba Town, the township people's government in Xiaba Village; agreed to abolish the Wudang District Baiyi Township, set up Baiyi Town, the township people's government in Baiyi Village.

Guiyang is located in the central part of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau Qianzhong mountains and hills, the Yangtze River and Pearl River watershed zone. The total terrain is high in the southwest and low in the northeast. Miaoling extends across the city, Gangfu undulating, peeling hills and basins, valleys, depressions. Relative height difference of 100-200 meters, 880 meters above sea level.
