Contrast
Light pink text on a light blue background may match your t-shirt, but it doesn't read very well. The text is present for reading; make sure it has enough contrast with the background that accomplishes this. If you've been unsure about contrast, then do a screen dump of your page, open your image editing software, and reduce the image to grayscale. You'll soon see if you have enough contrast.
Hierarchy
Changing the size of the type is one of the best ways to differentiate content. Colors and pretty boxes may help, but different sized type, used consistently throughout the page, sends a loud and clear signal to readers about the relative importance of page elements. It also means that if your readers are in a hurry, they can quickly pick out the important bits - which could mean they stay longer and keep reading.
Space
Let your type breathe. Don't be afraid to leave blank space on the page. This negative or white space will help focus attention on the text - and this is the loudest text, so let it be heard. Next, remember the line-height attribute; a good rule of thumb is line spacing, which is at least 140% of the text size. Good type designers put a lot of effort into the miniature white space located inside the typeface. They spend untold hours trying to strike a balance between the color black and the negative or blank space it surrounds. Similarly, we should take the time to consider macro whitespace, the blocks of text that form the ? whitespace?
