What kind of career is an electrical engineer?
The electrical engineering part of the program begins with circuit analysis and design. Two years later, however, the programs for the physics of electronic devices and information theory majors can be very different. But both majors will be electrical engineers, and aside from basic science and math, the only expertise they ****ing have is pretty much just circuit design principles. So my conclusion is: if you know circuit design, or ever did, you're an electrical engineer. After leaving college, electrical engineers go into so many different specialties and careers that it's almost impossible to categorize them anymore. Still, I have looked at professional practice using the IEEE organization as a framework. The IEEE currently has 39 affiliated societies that operate publications and conferences. As the practice of engineering changes, the affiliated societies must change as well, yet in the last 20 years the IEEE has added only a handful of affiliated societies, and one has disbanded, suggesting that the change has not been significant. However, even the longest-established affiliated societies have changed their dominant field, but have continued to use the same name. In addition, the names of many of the subordinate societies indicate only their role and not the underlying technology, such as the IEEE Communications Society. The web defines electrical engineering as "a field of engineering, usually involving the study and application of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism". Many of today's problems exist at layers above the physical layer, involve software, systems, algorithms, design, and cognition, and are often interdisciplinary. For example, technologies that are currently being hyped include machine learning, big data, security, self-driving cars, robotics, and area chains. Electronics is an enabler for all of these areas, but the important issues are not. Nonetheless, our electrical engineers have taken up this higher ground, and our training, abilities and hobbies seem perfectly suited to the job.
