School of Economics

The Department of Finance of Nankai University was founded in 1920 and was originally named the Department of Banking. It is one of the earliest disciplines of Nankai University. In 1954, the Department of Finance of Nankai University was closed due to departmental restructuring. In 1982, with the support of the State Education Commission and the People's Bank of China, it was rebuilt and the finance major was established. In the mid-1980s, the discipline construction of the Department of Finance developed rapidly, and a large number of famous financial subject leaders gathered here. In terms of academic research, research in the fields of international financial markets, exchange rate systems, and comparative financial systems ranks among the best in the country. Under the initiative of Professor Qian Rongkun, the Department of Finance pioneered the "Nankai-York" model in which three schools, including China and Canada's York University, jointly train MBA students, and then established a China-Canada joint training doctoral class in international finance, borrowing foreign academic experience. Strengthen the development of international finance majors.

In 1984, the Department of Finance established the insurance major and the rural finance major. In 1986, International Finance was rated by the State Education Commission as the only key international finance discipline in the country at that time. In 1999, in accordance with the requirements of the national discipline planning, the international finance major and the currency and banking major of the Department of Finance were merged into the finance major. Currently, the Department of Finance has two majors: Finance and Financial Engineering. Finance ranks among the top six domestic key financial disciplines assessed by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council.

The Department of Finance currently has more than 30 teachers, of which more than 30% have senior professional titles and more than 80% have doctoral degrees. Since its reconstruction 27 years ago, the Department of Finance has trained more than 3,000 undergraduate graduates and more than 1,000 doctoral and master's degree graduates for the society.
