Lincoln University of New Zealand is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in New Zealand. It was formerly an agricultural school and was founded in 1878. In 1896, it obtained the power to award degrees. In the same year, it was renamed Canterbury Agricultural College, and later became a branch of the University of New Zealand. In 1961, the University of New Zealand was dissolved, and the college became today's Lincoln University? A branch of the University of Canterbury. In 1990, as a major part of New Zealand's higher education reform, Lincoln University was granted independent educational rights.
