Li Hongzhang (1823-1901), commonly known as Li Zhongtang, also known as Li Hefei, was a Han nationality. His real name was Zhang Tong, his courtesy name was Jianfu or Zifu, and his nickname was Shaoquan (Quan). His ancestor, whose surname was Xu, moved from Hukou, Jiangxi Province to Hefei County, Luzhou Prefecture, Anhui Province. Li Hongzhang's eighth ancestor Xu Yingxi adopted his second son Shensuo to his in-law Li Xinzhuang. By the time of Emperor Li Hongzhang, the Li family finally became rich through diligence and thrift, owning two hectares of land. After years of hard study, his father Li Wen'an (1801-1855) finally passed the Jinshi examination in the same year as Zeng Guofan in the 18th year of Daoguang (1838), making the Li family a prominent local family. On the fifth day of the first lunar month of the third year of Daoguang's reign (February 15, 1823), Li Hongzhang was born in Modian Township, Dongxiang, Feidong County, Hefei (now part of Yaohai District, Hefei). Li Hongzhang ranked second among the brothers. The eldest brother Li Hanzhang (1821-1899) later became the governor; the third brother Li Hezhang, the fourth brother Li Yunzhang, the fifth brother Li Fengzhang, and the sixth brother Li Zhaoqing (1835-1873) also later became governor-general. Either rich or noble. As for Li Hongzhang himself, he served as Governor of Zhili and Minister of Commerce of Beiyang during his lifetime. He was awarded the Bachelor of Wenhua Palace. After his death, he was praised by the Empress Dowager Cixi as a person who "re-created Xuanhuang". The Qing Dynasty posthumously awarded him the title of Taifu, the first Suyi Marquis of Jin, and the posthumous title of Wenzhong. He was also given five thousand taels of silver for mourning. 10 ancestral temples were built in his native place and in the province where he had made meritorious service. The capital temple was regularly worshiped by local officials. This was the only Han official who built a temple in the capital during the Qing Dynasty.
