Zhongshan Road was built in the Sui Dynasty. It was once called Guanjie, Fuqian Street, Dajie, Cross Street, etc. It was the street where the government offices of the ruling class were located. In the 9th year of the Republic of China (1920), it was renamed Zhongshan Road in memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen.. The street is 1000 m long and 12.8 m wide, all paved with herringbone joints of blue bricks. The corridors on both sides are 2.4 m wide and the arcade is 4 m high.

It has assembled dozens of administrative institutions and countless business enterprises, including the municipal party committee, municipal government, public security bureau, procuratorate, sports commission, finance bureau, tax bureau, bank, department store, Zhongshan shopping mall, commercial building, Gaozhou Middle School, Shiyi Primary School, Xinhua Bookstore and post office.
