7. Haijiang School - the first university in Putian
In May 1944, the Anti-Japanese War was about to win. The government decided to establish a national junior college college in Fujian. At that time, the Ministry of Education sent three people, including Zhang Zhaohuan, chief of the Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs Department of the ministry, and special editors Zhou Zhongxia and Huang Jingwen, to Fujian to set up a Haijiang School Preparatory Committee and select the former site of the private Jinshi Middle School in Xianyou County as the temporary school building.
Jinshi Mountain is located in the northeast corner of Xianyou County, with Dafei Mountain behind it and Mulan River in front of it. It not only has an elegant and beautiful scenery, but is also famous for its long and profound cultural heritage. According to records, as early as the Qingli period of the Northern Song Dynasty, the famous scholar Chen Xiang taught apprentices here for more than 20 years. In the Yuan Dynasty, the Fu clan built a hall and opened a school here. Chen Xingzuo, the magistrate of Xianyou County in the Qing Dynasty, initiated the establishment of the government-run Jinshi Academy here, which was regarded as the highest academic institution in Xianyou at that time. The flourishing of lectures and apprenticeships in Jinshishan is a historical epitome of Xianyou's emphasis on education and the establishment of numerous book halls.
In the autumn of the same year, the Ministry of Education of the National Government appointed Zhang Zhaohuan as the principal of the National Haijiang School. Zhang appointed Tang Shouqian, the former principal of Fujian Normal College, as the academic director and Liu Yikun as the academic director. Zhang Zhaohuan, a native of Xianyou, graduated from Putian No. 10 Middle School and went to Tokyo to study in 1920. During the Anti-Japanese War, he served as the director secretary of the Ningxia Kuomintang Education Department; Tang Shouqian, a Putian native, received a master's degree in the United States and served as section chief of the Education Department after returning to China. The professors appointed by the school include Huang Yushu (Yishan), Huang Shouqi, Liu Yikun, Li Kemin, Nan Chaohe (Japanese), Xu Junman, Song Hengjia, Chen Jinming, Zhang Jiechun and others, all of whom were relatively well-known figures in the education field at that time. The school has a Normal Department and an Administrative Department. The Normal Department has a Literature, History and Education Group to train middle school education and educational administrators; the Administrative Department has a Civil Affairs Group to train government agency staff.
At the end of 1944, the school began to recruit students nationwide and established four examination areas, namely the Fujian examination area (located in Xianyou), the Shanghai examination area, the Liaoning examination area, and the Guangdong examination area. In accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Education, each examination area has established an admissions agency to handle admissions matters. It is reported that there were quite a number of applicants across the country at that time, and 200 students were finally admitted by the school, that is, 100 students were enrolled in the Normal Department and the Administrative Department. In January 1945, all the admitted freshmen reported to school and completed the registration procedures. Haijiang School officially started classes. This was the first semester of the school's first term. The academic duration was originally scheduled to be two years, but later changed to three years.
The school is located in Xianyou Jinshi Middle School (now Xianyou No. 1 Middle School). It is simple and simple, occupying only four rooms on the second floor of the high school building (that is, the red brick building) as classrooms, and an old building on the other two sides. The rooms are used as dormitories for teachers and students and as a venue for other activities. Because it is a state-run school, all expenses of the school are provided by the Ministry of Education. Each student is provided with a set of clothes by the state every year, and each student can receive more than ten yuan per month for accommodation, fuel, and food expenses.
Soon, the principal Zhang Zhaohuan was appointed as the principal of the National Fujian Music College, and Liang Longguang, the former principal of the National Fujian Music College, was changed to the principal of the National Haijiang School. Liang Longguang, nicknamed Piyun, was born in Yongchun County, Fujian Province in 1907. He studied at Wuchang Normal University in 1923, graduated from Shanghai University in 1926, and studied at Waseda University in Japan in the same year. In 1929, he founded Liming Senior High School in Quanzhou. Later, he went to Nanyang and served as the principal of Medanan Sudong Middle School in Indonesia and Zhonghua Middle School in Malaysia. In 1940, he participated in a condolence group for overseas Chinese returning to China led by Mr. Tan Kah Kee. Condolences to the anti-Japanese soldiers. In 1944, he was appointed as the principal of the National Fujian Music College. In 1945, he was appointed as the principal of the National Haijiang School and a member of the National Political Council. In 1947, he was transferred to the Fujian Department of Education. He is a famous educational practitioner in Fujian.
The purpose of Haijiang School is to cultivate talents for "administration and education" for Taiwan, which returned to China after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War. After Liang Piyun took over as the principal of the National Haijiang School, he reinterpreted the meaning of "haijiang". He believes that "the scope of maritime borders is not limited to Taiwan, and maritime border construction is not limited to coastal areas." It should be expanded overseas. Therefore, "cultivating overseas construction talents" was added as one of the school's purposes. In June 1946, Haijiang School moved to Quanzhou, a famous hometown of overseas Chinese, and expanded its enrollment scope. In addition to enrolling students in Fujian, Guangdong, Shanghai and other places, it also formulated a method for recommending admission to Nanyang Overseas Chinese School students.
Although Haijiang School has been located in Xianyou for a short time, it has had a great impact on Putian’s education. Due to national enrollment quota restrictions, only a small number of people from Putian were admitted to Haijiang schools. However, after the founding of the People's Republic of China, many of the students who graduated became the backbone of teachers in middle schools in Putian, and even served as teachers in various counties in Putian. There are also many people who are heads of education departments.
