There are a large number of precious and endangered wild animals in Qilian Mountain forest area in Xining, Qinghai.

In order to protect the ecological environment in Qilian Mountain area, the state established "Qilian Mountain National Nature Reserve" on 1988. It is the largest forest ecosystem and wildlife reserve in Gansu Province, located at the junction of Gansu and Qinghai provinces, starting from Songshan Mountain in Wushaoling in the east, reaching Dangjinshankou in the west, bordering Hexi Corridor in the north and Qaidam Basin in the south. It spans 8 counties (districts) including Tianzhu, Sunan, Gulang, Liangzhou, Yongchang, Shandan, Minle and Ganzhou. There are 22 protection stations, forest protection stations (spots) 155, 3 timber inspection stations, forest public security bureau 1, forest police station 2 1, and forestry employees 1466 in the whole region. It covers an area of 2.722 million hectares and has 607,000 hectares of forest land. There are 0/044 species of higher plants, 229 species of terrestrial vertebrates, and the forest coverage rate is 2 1.3%. There are 2 194 glaciers in China, with a reserve of 61500 million cubic meters. It is an important water conservation forest area in northwest China, which is maintained and adjusted all the year round.
