Chen Suhou is a "big official" in Hainan. He used to be the director of Hainan Agricultural Reclamation Bureau, the vice governor of Hainan Province and the deputy director of the provincial people's congress. After retiring from the army in 2003, he did not covet the comfortable and quiet life in the city, and returned to his hometown with his wife as a "farmer". After retirement, Chen Suhou is busier than when he was a vice governor. Three years later, it changed the poverty in Songmei Village.
Write a book called "Me and Farmers"
Chen Suhou is 69 years old. His hometown, Nanbao Town, Lingao County, Hainan Province, is a famous poverty-stricken township.
No matter how old the official is, Chen Suhou has never forgotten his "peasant" status. Chen Suhou wrote a book "Me and Farmers". The first section of the book is "I am also a farmer".
Chen Suhou's affection for farmers stems from his childhood experience. When he was young, forced by life, his whole family left their hometown and lived in the cowshed of a farmer in Danzhou, a neighboring county. For three years, six people in the whole family lived next to cows. That is, from that time on, he learned farm work such as ploughing, ploughing, harvesting and transplanting rice, and really tasted the pain and joy of being a farmer.
Chen Suhou regards farmers' affairs as his own and dares to speak for farmers. During the period of 1999, the Hainan provincial government required everyone in rural areas to pay 3 yuan money to watch movies every year. Although there is not much money, farmers have great opinions. Chen Suhou, then vice governor of Hainan Province, immediately wrote to Wang Xiaofeng, then governor of Hainan Province, arguing that this provision increased the burden on farmers and did not conform to the relevant provisions of the central and provincial governments to reduce the burden on farmers, and suggested that it be revoked. In the end, Wang Xiaofeng abolished this regulation, which really protected the interests of farmers.
Self-sufficiency in raising chickens and growing vegetables
After returning to his hometown, although he was nearly 70 years old, Chen Suhou still insisted on manual labor. Chen Suhou planted peanuts and sweet potatoes, planted a dozen vegetables in his own garden, and raised chickens and ducks with his wife. He said with a smile that he grows vegetables himself and basically doesn't need to buy food.
What to do when returning to the countryside is a problem that Chen Suhou often thinks about. Chen Suhou said that someone was talking about him behind his back. This man is really stupid. He has worked in the agricultural sector all his life, and he doesn't enjoy his retirement in Haikou. I don't know what to do when he returns to the countryside.
To get rich, build roads first. Chen Suhou believes that the important reason for poverty and backwardness in his hometown is the inconvenient transportation and the inability to transport good things. So his next job is to help the village build roads and bridges. When he had no money to build roads, he tried to find a way to ask the county government for a little, the town government raised a little, the company boss supported him a little, and the farmers themselves gave a little more.
Agriculture is inseparable from water. Chen Suhou calls himself a water conservancy enthusiast. He brought back his good experience when he was the vice governor in charge of water conservancy work in the province. Now, the water conservancy facilities in Nanpu Town are the best in the county, which greatly promotes agricultural production.
When Chen Suhou joined the work, he only had a first-year education in junior high school. He knew that farmers had no cultural pain, so he decided to help the village open kindergartens to prevent rural children from losing at the starting line. In 2003, Wang Huafang, who had been a private primary school teacher for 12 years, with the help of Chen Suhou, borrowed10,000 yuan from the credit union and opened the first kindergarten in the village. Now there are two classes and 56 children in the kindergarten.
Help farmers grow bananas to get rich
The environment has been beautified, and the villagers' ideas have also changed. It has become Chen Suhou's greatest wish to help his hometown get rid of poverty. Chen Suhou said that although my hometown has been poor for many years due to environmental, conceptual and historical reasons, it is rich in resources and is a good place to develop production. After careful investigation and thinking, Chen Suhou decided to set up a "farmer banana cooperative" in his hometown to help farmers grow bananas and get rich.
Because of the failure of planting bananas in the past, many villagers talked about the discoloration of bananas and dared not plant bananas any more. "Farmer Banana Cooperative" initially had only seven members, with Chen Suhou as the consultant and planting 54 acres of bananas. Under the coordination of Chen Suhou, seven villagers jointly guaranteed to lend 62,000 yuan to Nanpu Town Rural Credit Cooperative in 2003. The next year, they succeeded, not only paying off the loan, but also paying off the previous arrears. This year, the total income of bananas is about 400,000 yuan. Only Lin Maoqing, the village party secretary, earned 654.38+million yuan and earned 80,000 yuan. In 2004, the per capita annual income of Songmei Village reached an all-time high of 1. 8 million yuan.
