Beyond - growth process
Wong Ka Kui and Yip Sai Wing had already participated in bands before forming BEYOND. Later, I realized that everyone had similar music preferences, so they formed BEYOND. Later, BEYOND participated in the Yamaha Guitar Competition organized by "Guitar Magazine" and won the championship. The winning song was included in a mixed disc called "Hong Kong". In this competition, in addition to Ka Kui and Sai Wing, there are also members who have left the team. After participating in the song "Hong Kong", Ka Kui's younger brother Huang Jiaqiang officially joined BEYOND.
Beyond participated in the competition and won the championship in 1983
Beyond was formed in 1983 in order to participate in a music competition. At that time, Beyond had not yet formed. In 1984, Paul joined, Chen Shian left the team, and in 1986, Liu Zhiyuan joined. , but left the team in 1988, and the four-member group officially formed. In 1985, Beyond financed its first concert "Forever Waiting". In 1986, Beyond even financed the production of the record "Goodbye Ideal". Beyond signed a contract with the record company and released an EP of "Forever Waiting" in 1987. With the release of the third album "Old Footprints" in 1988, Beyond began to achieve glory.
Beyond started writing on his own in 1984
From the end of 1983 to 1984, BEYOND mostly participated in the performances of some bands and began to try to write more works. The completed works at that time included "Long Way Without Friends". This work was later changed to the Chinese work "Oriental Treasure" in the "Arab Dancing Girl" album. The English version is included in the "Lonely Kiss" cassette. There is also a song called "MYTH", and the above two songs are also in English. Later, I also completed some Chinese songs, such as "Waiting Forever".
Chen Shian left BEYOUND in 1985
At this time, Chen Shian was leaving BEYOND due to study problems. Paul, who was a designer, also officially joined BEYOND as a guitarist and also served as the band's designer. . BEYOND self-funded the "Forever Waiting Concert", which was held at the Caritas Center on Hong Kong Island. Although the fans present were not very enthusiastic on that day, their enthusiasm was still there. Beyond invited people from many record companies to watch, but none of them were seen. Fortunately, everyone who was supposed to come came - Chen Jiantian, BEYOND's first manager, which led to their cooperative relationship for the next five years. Legal disputes followed. They did everything on stage and behind the scenes by themselves, and even borrowed 16,000 yuan from the bank to successfully hold the concert. However, the final balance was a loss of 6,000 yuan. At that time, their labor force was only 1,000 yuan. It's only one yuan, which shows their determination even more. Their idea at the time was to introduce their works to other friends in the form of a public performance. The more optimistic idea was that they hoped to earn a sum of money from this concert to cover the cost of publishing cassettes in the future. . At the time, it could be said to be a bold and confident attempt.
Complete "Goodbye Ideal" in 1986
Complete the "Goodbye Ideal" cassette, and then start the publicity work, put up posters, distribute leaflets, find record stores to consign, deliver and collect It is really hard work for them to wait and do it all, but they are still willing to take on it as long as their music can be known to more people. They borrowed 20,000 yuan from their friends. Fortunately, they made money. Each of them received a dividend of 200 and 40 yuan. Although it was a small amount, it was very encouraging to them. BEYOND subsequently signed with Kinn's Music Ltd. After the band was released, they held a two-night small-scale performance called "Anatomy Party" at the Fringe Club in Central, Hong Kong.
At that time, BEYOND was a leader among underground bands in the eyes of a group of underground music fans. Everyone had different expectations for them to break out of the independent band category, but BEYOND understood in their hearts that this would be Their musical point of no return. Through this gathering, BEYOND hopes that music fans can understand their situation and create a musical watershed between the past Beyond and the future Beyond. During the two-night performance, they mainly performed their works from "Goodbye Ideal". BEYOND participated in the first Pan-Asian Music Festival in Taipei and performed on the same stage with top singers and musicians from Singapore, the Philippines, and Japan. This was the first time BEYOND performed overseas. They were originally scheduled to perform only two performances, but due to the overwhelming response, they were invited by the organizer to perform an additional performance. This made Beyond extremely excited. This undoubtedly strengthened their determination to break out of Hong Kong. At the same time, guitarist Liu Zhiyuan (Yuan Zai) was also added ). After returning to Hong Kong, it was time to record the first album. At that time, Paul and Yip Sai-wing formed a heavy metal band called "High Speed ??Beer Machine" and participated in some underground concert performances on a ticket basis, and participated in the 1986 "Carlsberg Pop Music Festival".
