In the study, Harley found through calculation that in the past few hundred years, the orbits of three comets were very similar, and the orbits of these comets were very close, obviously belonging to the same celestial body. Harley believes that these comets are actually the same comet, but it takes about 76 years for them to revolve around the sun and enter the inner sight of the solar system at different times.

Based on this observation, Halley predicted that comets would reappear in 1758. As he predicted, Halley's comet appeared in the sky on 1758, and proved the correctness of his prediction, thus greatly improving Halley's reputation in astronomy. Therefore, in order to commemorate Halley's contribution, astronomers at that time named this comet "Halley's Comet" after him, which is still in use today.
