The bridge was opened to traffic on September 28th 1985 and officially completed and opened to traffic on June 28th 1988. Designed by Guangdong Highway Survey Planning and Design Institute, it won the second prize of 1990 National Science and Technology Progress Award and the bronze prize of19/National Excellent Design Award.

Guangdong Highway Engineering Office, Guangdong Highway Design Institute, Hunan Road and Bridge Company, Hunan Traffic Design Institute and Guangdong Traffic Research Institute jointly set up the "Yuexiang Jiujiang Bridge Project Contracting Company" to undertake the design and construction. The project cost is 99.8 million yuan, including 4 million yuan subsidized by the Ministry of Communications, another 5.4 million dollars borrowed from Guangdong Trust and Investment Company in foreign exchange (the exchange rate was different then), and 55 million yuan borrowed from China People's Bank and China Construction Bank. The rest of the funds will be fully raised by the Guangdong Provincial Communications Department, and then the bridge toll will be collected to repay the loan.
