On July 29th, 1988, unemployed Zhu Wenbo (formerly an actor of Shanghai Peking Opera Theatre, who was sentenced to three years in 1984 for introducing women into prostitution) met Kobayashi Kanger, a Japanese translator of Shanghai Xinhuang Air Conditioning Equipment Company, a Sino-Japanese joint venture, in the antique shop in Jinjiang Hotel. That night, Zhu broke into Kobayashi's residence in Room 37, New South Building, Jinjiang Hotel, pushed Kobayashi to the bed, choked to death with his hands, robbed foreign exchange certificate of 2 yuan and a Japanese cigarette, and fled the scene. On August 2, Zhu was captured.
