According to Article 36 of the Customs Law of People's Republic of China (PRC), passengers who leave the country with US dollars (or equivalent foreign currencies) shall declare to the customs. According to Article 42 of the Regulations on Foreign Exchange Control in People's Republic of China (PRC), passengers who leave or enter the country with more than US$ 20,000 (or equivalent in other foreign currencies) shall declare to the customs. Passengers who carry more than the above-mentioned amount of currency when leaving the country and fail to declare it according to the regulations will be regarded as violating the monetary management regulations, including smuggling.
