1853, under the charter of Queen Victoria, Standard Chartered Bank was established.
Five years later, 1858, the first branch was established in China. On July 3 1858, a notice appeared in Shanghai Zilin West Newspaper, saying that "with the approval of the board of directors, Standard Chartered Bank set up a branch in Shanghai today, with the address of Beimen Street, and Macquarie as the first manager." Therefore, Shanghai Bank was named after its first manager. From now on, all branches of Standard Chartered Bank in Chinese mainland will be renamed Macquarie Bank.
