On August 3rd, the 5th Huawei Asia-Pacific Innovation Day was held in Chengdu, China. Xu Wenwei, director of Huawei and president of the Strategic Research Institute, revealed at the meeting that by the end of August, Huawei had signed more than 50 commercial contracts for 5G worldwide and delivered more than 200,000 5G base stations, nearly two thirds of which were built by Huawei.
Xu Wenwei introduced that 28 of the more than 50 5G contracts are from Europe, 1 1 from the Middle East, 6 from Asia-Pacific, 4 from America and 1 from Africa.
Xu Wenwei believes that Huawei's 5G can lead the industry mainly based on three factors.
The first is to vote early. Huawei started research on 5G in 2009, when 4G was just put into commercial use.
The second is to throw more. In the past 10 years, a total of $4 billion was invested in 5G.
The third is the depth of investment. In the research of 5G, Huawei not only makes products, but more importantly, Huawei actively participated in the formulation of standards at an early stage and ran through the basic research of 5G.
At the same time, from chips to materials, from heat dissipation to algorithms, Huawei needs to explore from scratch in many aspects, with accumulation and investment behind it.
Xu Wenwei said that with Moore's Law and Shannon's Law approaching the limit, the communication industry is facing bottlenecks and challenges. Huawei's innovation strategy is: from the 1.0 era of technical and engineering innovation based on customer demand to the 2.0 era of theoretical breakthrough and basic technology invention based on vision.
The core idea of innovation 1.0 is: based on customer needs and challenges, it is technological innovation, engineering innovation, product and solution innovation, and innovation from 1 to N. The core is to help customers and partners improve their competitiveness, increase their income or reduce their costs, and help customers achieve commercial success. In the past, Huawei had a large number of engineering and technological innovations in wireless, optical networks, smart phones and other fields, which brought great commercial and social value to customers.
The core idea of Innovation 2.0 is: based on the vision and vision of the future intelligent society, breaking the theoretical and basic technology bottlenecks that restrict the development of ict is an innovation to achieve theoretical breakthroughs and basic technology inventions, and an innovation from 0 to 1.
Xu Wenwei said that the core of Innovation 2.0 is the theoretical breakthrough and invention of basic technology based on vision, and one of the sources of theoretical breakthrough and invention of basic technology is academia, and the challenges put forward by industry and the investment in university research are boosters. Theoretical breakthroughs and technological inventions are highly uncertain. The essence of this uncertainty determines that it cannot be a closed innovation, and it must share the achievements and enjoy the ability. The concept of Huawei Innovation 2.0 is "open innovation and inclusive development", which is jointly promoted by universities, research institutions, academia and industry.
The following is a record of Xu Wenwei's speech.
Hello, ladies and gentlemen,
Thank you for attending Asia-Pacific Innovation Day. Chengdu is the hometown of giant pandas and the capital of innovation. As early as 250 BC, Dujiangyan was a miracle that the ancients benefited mankind through innovation. This year, we are gathered in the capital of innovation to discuss innovation and the future smart world, as well as the changes brought by technology.
Human society is about to enter the intelligent society.
Ten years ago, we never expected that technology would bring such great changes and convenience to everyone's life today. Similarly, standing today and looking at tomorrow is still full of expectations for the future. I think human society will evolve into an intelligent society in the next twenty or thirty years, and the intelligent society has three characteristics, namely, the perception of everything, the interconnection of everything and the intelligence of everything.
In the intelligent society, everything can feel and perceive the physical world and convert it into digital signals; The network connects everything and connects all data online; Applications based on big data and artificial intelligence will realize the intelligence of everything.
Thanks to advanced ICT technology, these three characteristics have been realized. ICT infrastructure (such as 5G, Internet of Things, AI, etc.). ) will be the cornerstone of the intelligent world.
Internet of Everything: the Foundation of 5G Building a Smart World
In the Internet of Everything, 5G, as a technology to connect everything, has built the foundation of the intelligent world. The development of 5G is in a critical period of digital transformation in all walks of life around the world. Today, the development of human industrialization is moving from mechanization and electrification to automation, digitalization and intelligence. It can be said that the arrival of 5G technology is just the right time.
On the one hand, 5G can provide large bandwidth and low latency on the basis of traditional connection. It provides a brand-new function of slicing for different applications, so that it can adapt to various complex industry application scenarios. Undoubtedly, 5G technology does provide a strong connection foundation for the intelligent society.
At the same time, we also see that a large number of new technologies such as cloud, artificial intelligence, big data analysis and edge computing need to be used in the intelligent process of all walks of life. These new technical means are precisely because of the support of 5G, the application scenarios will be greatly increased and the application efficiency will be greatly improved.
With the support of 5G, whether it is cloud, artificial intelligence or edge computing, it will really release power and be everywhere. The integration of 5G and these key technologies will greatly accelerate the digitalization and intelligence of all walks of life.
5G makes coal mines safer
5G has been widely used in all walks of life, but I want to share a latest case with you. This is a rare earth mine in Inner Mongolia. As we all know, the climate in the area where the mine is located is very bad and the site environment is very complicated. These harvesters in mines often run in unsafe environments. In this rare earth mine we see, there are always 30 harvesters, each with four drivers working in two shifts. Mine operators also encounter many difficulties.
The first is the frequent occurrence of safety accidents. The natural conditions in the mine are very bad, and even the most experienced drivers will inevitably have safety accidents. Second, the work efficiency is low. Even the most experienced driver can only run ten kilometers per hour, which is the prescribed safe speed. The third problem is the high cost. Each driver is 250,000 yuan a year, with an average of 20,000 yuan a month, which is probably the most expensive driver in China. Even so, no one can be recruited, because the conditions are too difficult for anyone to go.
Nowadays, unmanned harvesters equipped with 5G network have saved 6,543,800 yuan for the drivers of each car. In addition, the speed of the vehicle can be increased to 35 kilometers, and the efficiency is greatly improved. More importantly, because of unmanned driving, the economy is greatly saved and casualties are avoided.
Every technological development is to help human beings, not to replace them, and ultimately to make human society better.
Huawei 5G is spread all over the world.
Here, I also want to report the latest situation of 5 G to you, and thank the customers and partners of global operators for their trust and support. By the end of August, we had signed more than 50 commercial contracts for 5G worldwide. From Europe to the Middle East to the Asia-Pacific region, many operators around the world have actively started the deployment of 5G networks.
Why Huawei's 5G can be the most advanced in the industry;
The first is to vote early. We started the research of 5G in 2009, when 4G was just put into commercial use.
The second is to throw more. In the past 10 years, a total of $4 billion was invested in 5G.
The third is the depth of investment. In the research of 5G, we not only make products, but more importantly, we actively participate in the formulation of standards in the early stage and run through the basic research of 5G.
At the same time, from chips to materials, from heat dissipation to algorithms, many aspects need to be explored from scratch, behind which is accumulation and investment.
Intelligence of Everything: Providing Universal Intelligence for the World
In the intelligence of everything, the application based on big data and artificial intelligence makes intelligence omnipotent. According to the global industry insight forecast of Huawei GIV2025, by 2025, the amount of new data will be 180ZB, which is 8 times that of 2065. The annual improvement of computing power will bring a lot of heterogeneous computing needs.
Huawei has accumulated a lot of money, unswervingly invested in intelligent computing strategically, and constantly made innovations and breakthroughs. On October 9th, 65438/kloc-0 this year, we released the highest performance CPU Kunpeng 920 based on ARM in the industry.
In 20 18, facing the terminal field, Kirin 980 chip was released, and the world's first AI mobile phone was launched, pushing the mobile phone to a new height of wisdom.
Facing the AI field, we released Ascent 3 10 chip, covering the full stack capabilities of chips, chip enablement, frameworks and applications, as well as products and services including public cloud, private cloud, edge computing, Internet of Things industry terminals and consumer terminals, providing economic and rich computing power, and easily acquiring AI computing power like electricity, thus realizing all-inclusive AI in the whole industry.

Kunpeng 920 has brought innovative breakthroughs in high performance, high throughput, high integration and high energy efficiency, and pushed computing to a new height. Based on the authorization of ARM architecture, it is independently designed by Huawei, and it is the highest performance CPU in the industry.
The technology behind the visible products is invisible.
As I said just now, like 5G, we see products, and the technology under the ice is the real competitiveness. Mathematics, chip design, materials, heat dissipation, etc. These are the basic abilities behind.
Huawei has more than 60 basic technology laboratories, more than 700 doctors in mathematics and more than 200 doctors in physical chemistry. The breakthrough of mathematical algorithm decided the birth of SingleRAN. As early as 199 1, Huawei designed the first ASIC chip and set up a chip design room.
The anticorrosion research of materials makes Huawei products adapt to various environments, and the research of graphene greatly improves the heat dissipation efficiency of batteries; The fanless cooling design reduces the size of the base station by 30%. ...
Huawei's innovation concept upgrade: from 1 to n to 0 to 1
With Moore's Law and Shannon's Law approaching the limit, the communication industry is facing bottlenecks and challenges. Huawei's innovation strategy is: from the 1.0 era of technical and engineering innovation based on customer demand to the 2.0 era of theoretical breakthrough and innovation based on basic technological inventions driven by vision.
In the past, Huawei had a lot of engineering and technological innovations in the fields of wireless, optical networks and smart phones, which brought great commercial and social value to customers.
Taking visual hypothesis+technological breakthrough as methodology
Then, go back to the characteristics of the intelligent world at the beginning. Starting from the vision hypothesis, we first study how people will live, work, entertain and care in the future, ask questions, use questions to discover technology, and use questions to capture future technical directions and business opportunities, hoping to incubate new industries and new product forms and study the future intelligent world. Around the whole process of information, from the generation, storage, calculation, transmission and presentation of information to the consumption of information, research and explore the future technology.
Take open innovation and inclusive development as the ideological concept
So, what is Huawei Innovation 2.0? Specifically:
The core of Innovation 2.0 is the theoretical breakthrough and the invention of basic technology based on vision, and one of the sources of theoretical breakthrough and basic technology invention is academia, and the challenge and research input put forward by industry to universities is the booster.
Take university cooperation and technical input as strategic measures.
Huawei set up a strategic research institute to coordinate the landing of Innovation 2.0. We will adopt a variety of ways, such as "supporting university research, building our own laboratory, and investing in multi-path technology", to realize innovation 2.0, and to integrate the problems of industry, the ideas of academia, and the beliefs of venture capital.
Today, we need theoretical breakthroughs and the invention of new basic technologies. In the intelligent world, the obstacles are long. We will continue to explore the unknown new world and boldly sail to places where no one has ever been. Welcome to Asia-Pacific Innovation Day again. I wish you a pleasant trip to Chengdu. Thank you!
