AMD's recent transformation has come to an end, emphasizing that they have seen the current situation of the PC market and the subsequent market demand of the embedded market. In addition to successfully cutting into the game console supply chain, they also acquired SeaMicro before, and will continue to strengthen the layout of the embedded market in the future. It is estimated that the embedded field will account for 20% of AMD's revenue in the fourth quarter of this year, and at least 40-50% of AMD's total revenue in the future. In addition, in the field of low-power data servers related to big data trends, AMD will adopt a two-pronged strategy of x86 and ARM architecture.
AMD's second-generation G series has several product points. First, from the introduction of the core architecture, the former Bobcat Bobcat has been replaced by the Jaguar Cheetah core with the same architecture as the PS4 processor, and the design of two cores is adopted, with a maximum of four cores. The clock pulse is from 1GHz to 2GHz, and L2 is also upgraded from 5 12KB to 2MB. With the new GCN architecture with integrated GPU in HD8000 series, it is estimated that the running efficiency of CPU will be increased by 1 13% and that of GPU will be increased by 20%.
In addition to integrated I/O control, we also added a lot of native I/O support to meet different needs, and also supported ECC memory. In order to meet the needs of industrial control field, G-series SoC can work normally in a wide temperature environment of -40 degrees to 85 degrees, which is more suitable for special environments such as factory buildings and automotive electronics.
Although I/O management is integrated this time, thanks to the 28nm process, the size of DIE is smaller than that of the previous generation G-series APU, and there is no need to add additional I/OHub chips and native I/O support, and there is no need to add additional conversion chips through PCIe, so the motherboard design can be simplified, and the TDP of the product line is also from 9W to 25W, which is helpful for the design of fanless products.
Because G-series APU integrates AMD's high-performance graphics GPU, if it is used in machine vision of production inspection, it can also provide the required performance through parallel operation. In addition, if it is used in factory controllers, POS systems and vehicle communication systems, it can also provide 3D GUI by using high-performance HD8000GPU. Although G-series and PS4 dedicated processors are also designed for Jaguar core, the relationship between them is not deep because of their different uses, including clock setting, integrated GPU level, I/O support and other customized designs for game consoles.
At present, AMD has announced four second-generation G-series processors in the performance comparison table, namely GX-420, GX-4 15, GX-275 and GX-2 10 (in the figure, GT series is Pocket Monster G-series APU). AMD emphasizes that compared with its competitors, they have better advantages in performance-to-power ratio and performance balance. At present, they have also won many embedded hardware and software manufacturers. Including the use of Advantech, Huaqing and so on. AMD intends to lay a good foundation for its enterprise transformation into the embedded field through the release of the second generation G series embedded SoC.
