The university is a comprehensive university featuring marine and aquatic products and coordinated development of multiple disciplines.

The predecessor of the university is the Guangdong Provincial Higher Fisheries Vocational School, which was founded in 1935.

On January 10, 1997, Zhanjiang Fisheries College and Zhanjiang Agricultural College merged to form the Zhanjiang Ocean University.

On December 2001, Zhanjiang Meteorological School, a national key secondary school, was merged into the university.

On June 15, 2005, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the name of the Zhanjiang Ocean University was changed to Guangdong University of Marine Science and Technology.
