Last week, we took stock of the new energy vehicles licensed in Beijing over the past two years, and found that Beijing holds a high 19 percent share of the private pure electric passenger car market. The BYD Yuan, Rongwei Ei5, BYD Qin, BAIC EU series and BYD Song are the top 5 favorite pure-electric models for Beijing owners in 2019.
There was no sign of Tesla in the Top?20 models list, and many partners sent in questions: where is Tesla? Where is Tesla?
To say that the Chinese people are most familiar with the electric car brand, I am afraid that Tesla is none other than Tesla. Back in September 2018, a big data report released by an insurance company called Veygo had shown that Tesla was the most frequently searched car brand by Chinese people.
In these two years, Tesla, which brings its own flow, is like a hanged man in China: in July 2018, it signed an agreement with Shanghai Lingang to open a wholly-owned factory; in January 2019, it broke ground for the Shanghai Super Factory; in October 2019, the domestic Tesla was officially mass-produced; in January 2020, the domestic Tesla Model?3 was officially delivered.
So, how did Tesla's market performance in China before domestication?
Today, with the help of imported new energy passenger cars on the insurance data, to disk Tesla, in order to answer the questions in your mind.
01, 2019 imported new energy vehicles, Tesla accounted for 81%
2018, including pure electric and plug-in hybrid models, including imported new energy passenger cars totaled 31,000 licensed; in 2019, this data increased by 78% year-on-year to nearly 56,000 units.
In our last compendium, we mentioned that the uptake of domestically produced new-energy passenger cars slipped 5% year-on-year in 2019, while imported new-energy vehicles saw a sharp year-on-year increase. In 2019, imported new-energy vehicles gobbled up 3% of the share of domestically produced new-energy passenger cars, with a market share of 6%.
In terms of power type, 2019 has also seen a big change compared with 2018.
In 2018, among the imported new energy vehicles on the market, pure electric and plug-in hybrid models presented a balanced 5:5 situation; while in 2019, this comparison was seriously skewed, with pure electric models accounting for as much as 85%.
As many of you may have guessed, much of the increase in the share of imported pure electric models stems from the delivery of the Tesla Model?3.
Since February 2019, the Tesla Model?3 has been leading the list of the world's best-selling new energy models, and its performance in China has been equally impressive.
By brand, Tesla, including the Model?3, Model?X and Model?S, has been pivotal in China's imported new-energy passenger car market, with a total of 45,000 vehicles licensed in 2019, accounting for 81 percent of the total, an increase of nearly 40 percentage points from 2018.
In First Electric's previous delivery inventory of new car-making forces, it was also mentioned that in the pure electric market in 2019, Tesla performed outstandingly and ranked fourth in terms of corporate-level uptake, behind BYD (130,000 units), BAIC New Energy (85,000 units) and Baojun (47,000 units).
02, Beijing market ranked second, market share 15%
Sub-regionally, imported new energy passenger cars have licensing performance in 31 provinces and cities across the country (statistics do not include Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan for the time being). In terms of the ranking of provinces and cities in 2019, Guangdong Province has a clear advantage, achieving the championship and is the only province with more than 10,000 annual uploads of imported new energy passenger vehicles.
Shanghai surpassed Zhejiang and Beijing to take second place. Beijing ranked third with a slim margin of 121 units, while Zhejiang province ranked fourth.
All of the above Top?4 provinces and cities have more than 10% market share of imported cars. The total number of imported cars in the above Top 4 provinces and cities accounted for a staggering 62% of the national market share.
From the perspective of specific models, there are 25 imported new energy models **** licensed in 2019, except for the three Tesla models, the BMW i3, the Volkswagen Golf, the Audi e-tron, and the Jaguar I-PACE, the rest of which are plug-in hybrid models.
In absolute terms, ? pure electric models were licensed in higher volumes. With the exception of the Top?5, all models had less than 1,000 licenses for the year.
The three Tesla brothers occupied three seats among the Top?5 models. Among them, the licensing volume of one model, the Tesla Model?3, has been close to 34,000 units. Among the new energy passenger cars imported in 2019, the uptake of Model?3 has been as high as 61%.
03, imports accounted for 8% of Beijing's private pure electric market, Model?3 among Beijing's Top?5
The Tesla Model?3 monopoly of the market is staged in almost every province and city.In 2019, in the market for imported pure electric passenger cars, the champion imported model in 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across the country is the Tesla Model?3, and the Beijing market is no exception.
Among the 8,456 imported new energy vehicles licensed in Beijing in 2019, 85% are Tesla brand models, and 79% are Tesla Model?3.
From the perspective of the private market, there are seven models of imported purely electric passenger car market licensed in the Beijing market*** in 2019, occupying 8% of the Beijing market. Among them, two models, Tesla Model?3 and Model?X, have more than 1,000 annual licenses, accounting for 64% and 20% of the private imported pure electric market in Beijing, respectively.
Compare that to the rankings we summarized last week for domestic pure electric passenger cars in Beijing, and it's clear that the list would change if we added the data for imported Teslas.
The Tesla Model?3 replaces the BYD Song to take fifth place. The Tesla Model?X is also among the Top?20 at No. 15.
The BYD e2 and Pentium, which were previously ranked 19th and 20th, will be pushed out of the list.
With mass deliveries of the domestically produced Model?3, Tesla will bring more intense competition to the Beijing and national markets. The news that Tesla China would adopt Ningde Times' "cobalt-free batteries" sent shockwaves through the industry, and there was even news that Musk was trying to push the minimum price of the Model?3 down to 200,000 yuan.
Would you consider buying a domestic Model?3 if it really did drop to $200,000? Light up the comments section and let's talk about it!
