In September, 2002, the Institute of Computing Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Beijing Shenzhou Loongson Integrated Circuit Design Co., Ltd. jointly announced the successful development of the first high-performance general-purpose CPU Loongson 1 with independent intellectual property rights in China.

On September 28th, 2002, China Academy of Sciences held a grand press conference in Beijing Great Wall Hotel, announcing that the first commercial general-purpose high-performance CPU chip "Godson" 1 with independent intellectual property rights in China has been successfully developed and can be mass-produced. To the outside world's surprise, Computing announced that "Godson" will mainly target the embedded chip market, not the PC market.
