He's definitely doing him a favor, and I've always been super fond of Damon. He has always believed that as a vampire there is no need to suppress his bloodlust, and after so many years and Elena's influence on him, he has been able to control his drinking of human blood, whereas Stefan is obviously not only weaker because of his long absence from human blood, but also has the hidden danger of getting out of control once he drinks human blood.
