With the NDS physical machine, you have to turn on wifi to catch them in the dream world, you can't catch the main pets on the map in the game (that's the three you pick at the beginning).

If you're using an emulator, you can't get into the dream world, or you can change it directly with the gold finger modifier. Either that or play the altered game, look up black and white 649 online I think. The game usually comes with a capture table, which is very detailed, and the capture locations are different for different mods~~
