"Farewell"

Sung by: Unknown

Word: Li Shutong

Music: John Pound Otway

There's a long pavilion by the old road, and the grass is blue even in the sky.

The evening wind whisks the willow flute, and the setting sun is beyond the mountains.

The end of the world, the corner of the world, friends half scattered.

A pot of cloudy wine is all I have left, and this night I have a cold dream of parting.

Beyond the pavilion, by the ancient road, the grass is blue.

If you are going to be here for a long time, don't hesitate to come back.

The end of the world, the end of the world, the end of the world, the end of the world, the end of the world, the half-forgotten friends.

We all know that reunions are hard to come by, but it's hard to resist parting.

Expanded Information

Background:

The tune of the song is taken from the American song "Dreaming of Home and Mother" composed by John Pound Otway. Dreaming of Home and Mother" was an "entertainer's song", which flourished in the United States in the late 19th century and was sung by white actors with blacked-out faces who played blacks, and the music was modeled after the tone of black songs.

When Li Shutong was studying in Japan, the Japanese songwriter Inuyasha Kukai used the melody of Dreaming of Home and Mother to fill in the lyrics of a song titled Travel Sorrows. Li Shutong's "Farewell" is based on Inukai's "Traveling Sorrows".
