The predecessor of Hohai University can be traced back to the "River and Sea Engineering Specialized School" founded by Zhang Jian in Nanjing in 1915, which was the first higher education institution in China to cultivate water conservancy talents, and was merged with the engineering department of the National Southeast University to establish the Hohai University of Engineering in 1924, and then merged with the Fourth National Sun Yat-sen University in 1927, and was renamed National Central University and Nanjing University later.
