Chengdu, a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Sichuan Province, abbreviated as Rong, also known as "Rongcheng, Jincheng", is the capital of Sichuan Province, a sub-provincial city, a megacity, the seat of the Western Theatre of Operations, an important national high-tech industrial base, a trade and logistics center and a comprehensive transportation hub identified by the State Council, and an important central city in the western region.

In 2018, the city has 20 districts (cities) and counties under its jurisdiction, as well as Chengdu Hi-Tech Zone and Chengdu Direct Management Zone of Tianfu New Area, with a total area of 14,335 square kilometers, a resident population of 16.33 million people, and a GDP of 1,534.277 billion yuan.

Chengdu is located in the western part of the Sichuan Basin, on the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, bordering Deyang City in the northeast and Ziyang City in the southeast, Meishan City in the south, Ya'an City in the southwest, and Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in the northwest; its geographical location lies between longitude 102°54′~104°53′E and latitude 30°05~31°26′N. In 2016, the city's land area was 14,335 square kilometers, and the urban area was 4,241.81 square kilometers, of which the built-up area was 837.27 square kilometers.

Chengdu has a subtropical monsoon climate, characterized by early spring, hot summer, cool autumn and warm winter, with an average annual temperature of 16°C and an annual rainfall of about 1,000 mm. A significant feature of Chengdu's climate is cloudy and foggy, with short sunshine hours. The folk proverb "Sichuan dog barks at the sun" is a graphic description of this climate feature.

Another distinctive feature of Chengdu's climate is the humid air, which makes the summer months hot and muggy even though the temperature is not too high (the maximum temperature is usually no more than 35℃), and the winter months, when the temperature averages more than 5℃, are cold and gloomy due to the cloudy skies and humid air. Rain in Chengdu is concentrated in the months of July and August, with drought and little rain in winter and spring, and very little snow or ice.

It can be divided into plains, hills and mountains according to the type of landform; it can be divided into 11 categories according to the type of soil, such as rice soil, tidal soil, purple soil, yellow soil, yellow-brown soil, etc.; it can be divided into 8 categories according to the type of land use status, such as arable land, garden land, pasture land, etc.; the area of the plains is very large, amounting to 4,971.4 square kilometers, which accounts for 40.1% of the total land area of the city, much higher than the national share of 12% and the Sichuan province's share of 2.54% of the level;

The hilly area accounts for 27.6% and the mountainous area accounts for 32.3%; the land settlement index is high. Fertile land, deep soil, mild climate, convenient irrigation, the proportion of usable area up to 94.2%, the city's average land settlement index of 38.22%, of which the plains up to 60% or more, much higher than the national level of 10.4% and the level of 11.5% in Sichuan Province.
