E-commerce turnover grows year by year
China's e-commerce turnover grows year by year from 2011 to 2020, but the growth rate is declining.In 2020, the national e-commerce turnover reaches 37.21 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.5%.
Online retail sales exceeded 11 trillion yuan
In 2020, the national online retail sales reached 11.76 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 10.9%. Online retail sales of physical goods amounted to 9.76 trillion yuan, up 14.8% year-on-year, accounting for 24.9% of total retail sales of consumer goods, an increase of 4.2 percentage points from 2019.
From the perspective of user groups, data from China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) showed that as of December 2020, the size of the country's Internet users amounted to 989 million, an increase of 85.4 million compared with March 2020, with the Internet penetration rate reaching 70.4%, of which the size of online shopping users reached 782 million, and the proportion of online shopping users to all Internet users has reached 79.1%.
From the perspective of commodity categories, the monitoring of business big data shows that clothing, shoes, hats, needles and textiles, daily necessities, household appliances and audio-visual equipment ranked the top three in terms of online retail sales, accounting for 22.27%, 14.53% and 10.80% of the physical online retail sales, respectively. Chinese and Western medicines, tobacco, alcohol and beverages achieved faster growth, with year-on-year growth rates exceeding 30.0%.
Eastern region is the main market for e-commerce
From a regional perspective, e-tailing sales in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions accounted for 84.54%, 8.37%, 5.68% and 1.41% of the country's total, with year-on-year growth rates of 10.7%, 6.2%, 4.1% and 7.4%, respectively.
From the provincial point of view, the top ten provinces in terms of online retail sales were Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Beijing, Jiangsu, Fujian, Shandong, Anhui, Hebei, and Henan, with the combined online retail sales accounting for 87.46% of the national total.
