During the Cretaceous period, new giant carnivorous dinosaurs appeared. They all had powerful upper and lower jaws, short forelimbs and long hind legs. The final giant killer was the most intelligent and powerful of all, the ferocious Tyrannosaurus rex. But 35 million years before that, even bigger dinosaur killers lived in North Africa and South America.
The biggest of all the carnivores was the Megalosaurus. This dinosaur from Argentina was more than 12 meters long and weighed 10 tons. It outweighed the largest Tyrannosaurus rex by at least the equivalent of a minibus.
While the Tyrannosaurus rex was one of the largest animals in the world it lived in, the Tyrannosaurus rex ate phytophagous dinosaurs many times its own size. The largest animal to ever live on land lived in the same area as Megalosaurus at almost the same time: the 100-ton phytophagous dinosaur Argentinosaurus
Megalosaurus, the largest carnivorous dinosaur, preyed on the giant phytophagous dinosaur Ribeirchosaurus.
Almost the same types of dinosaurs as these South American dinosaurs also lived in North Africa at the same time.
The thin, sharp teeth of the Tyrannosaurus rex were ideal for slicing, and it also had sharp serrated teeth that resembled serrated dinner knives. The teeth of the ferocious Tyrannosaurus rex were also serrated, but their teeth were much thicker and were used to strip or wring muscles from bones
