List of the World's Most Influential Big Data Companies

Currently, the world's big data companies are divided into two main camps. One group belongs to the emerging enterprises that focus purely on big data technology, hoping to bring innovative solutions to the market and push the development of technology. Others are established vendors who were originally in the database/data warehousing business, and who intend to capitalize on their advantageous position to impact the big data space and promote their existing installed base and product line reputation to the new wave of technology. Here's a look at today's list of fifteen big data companies, ten of which have long been well known, the other five are newcomers.

1, IBM

According to a report released by Wikibon, as the company with the best big data revenue in 2012, IBM earned $1.3 billion from big data-related products and services in the past year. Its specific products include server and storage hardware, database software, analytic applications, and related services. Among the products IBM has developed around big data, DB2, Informix and InfoSphere database platforms, Cognos and SPSS analytics applications are among the most well-known, and IBM also provides support for the Hadoop open source data analytics platform.

2, HP

Hewlett-Packard ranked second in big data revenue in 2012, totaling $664 million. The vendor also provides hardware, software, and services related to it, and its best-known solution is the Vertica analytics platform.

3. Teradata

Teradata was the world's third-largest big data vendor in 2012, with revenues totaling $435 million, and has made a name for itself with its hardware platforms, databases and analytics software. It also has specialized analytics tools for the retail and transportation industries.

4. Oracle

Although Oracle has always been known in the eyes of the world for its dominant database products, they are in fact one of the major contenders in the big data space. Their Oracle Big Data Appliance combines Intel servers, the Cloudera Hadoop distribution, and Oracle's NoSQL databases.Oracle ranked fifth on the list of big data companies in 2012, with revenue totaling $415 million.

5. SAP

SAP offers a range of analytics tools, but the most recognizable is its HANA in-memory database, which ranked sixth in the big data competition in 2012, with revenue totaling $368 million.

6, EMC

EMC on the one hand to help customers save and analyze big data, but also serves as a big data analytics think tank "Marketing Science Lab" home - this lab specializes in analyzing marketing data. EMC's latest bombshell is its support for Pivotal, along with VMware and General Electric, which will integrate Hadoop with EMC's Greenplum database and HAWQ querying tool. EMC was ranked No. 7 on the 2012 Big Data Companies list, with revenues totaling $336 million.

7, Amazon

Amazon has always been known for its enterprise cloud platform, but has also launched a series of big data products, including Hadoop-based Elastic MapReduce, DynamoDB big data database, and the ability to smoothly collaborate with Amazon Web Services Redshift scale-out parallel data warehousing solution.

8, Microsoft

Microsoft's big data development strategy can be described as ambitious, including the establishment of a partnership with Hortonworks, the establishment of a big data start-up and the launch of HDInsights tools based on the Hortonworks data platform. Microsoft is also well known for its SQL Server database and was ranked ninth among big data companies in 2012, with revenue totaling $196 million.

9. Google

10, VMware

VMware has always been known for its cloud computing and virtualization solutions, but lately it's also begun to gradually step into the big data space. 11. The new kid on the block: Cloudera

No one would dare to list the top big data vendors without Cloudera, a $141 million venture-backed startup that even includes such big data veterans as Google, Facebook, Oracle and Yahoo. The company first brought the Apache Hadoop platform to enterprise customers in 2008.

12, Hortonworks

Hortonworks is another Hadoop vendor and was backed by more than $70 million in venture capital in 2011 after spinning off from Yahoo! It's taking aim at Cloudera in its development, and the young player has a number of strategic partners like Microsoft, Rackspace, Red Hat, Teradata and others standing behind it.

13, Splunk

According to WIkibon's statistics, Splunk is currently the largest pure big data vendor in terms of market share, with 2012 annual revenue totaling $186 million. The company focuses primarily on the machine data analytics business.

14. 10Gen

10Gen's most influential success story is its open source MongoDB, an industry-leading NoSQL database. The company's strategic investment partners include Intel, Red Hat, and In-Q-Tel. 10Gen ranked third among pure Hadoop and NoSQL companies last year, with revenues totaling $36 million.

15. MapR

You've heard of MapR's NoSQL database, M7, which partners with Amazon's Cloud Platform and Google Compute Engine. Last year MapR ranked fourth among pure Hadoop and NoSQL business enterprises, with revenues totaling $23 million.
