Message from the President of the Chinese Society for the Law of the Sea

On January 13, 2011, the Chinese Society for the Law of the Sea held its 2011 New Year Tea Party and Academic Lecture in Beijing. More than 50 representatives from more than 20 units and departments of the Ministry of Justice, the State Oceanic Administration and other relevant state departments and Tsinghua University, Peking University, Renmin University of China, China University of Political Science and Law, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and other institutions of higher learning and scientific research institutions attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Zhang Haiwen, secretary-general of the Chinese Society for the Law of the Sea.

Jia Yu, Deputy Secretary General of the Society, reported to the members on the work of the Society over the past year. 2010, the Chinese Society of the Law of the Sea invited experts on the law of the sea from international organizations, at home and abroad, and renowned experts on the law of the sea at home and abroad, and *** held 15 academic reports, seminars and symposiums, carried out international exchanges with the Japan Society of International Law, the Law of the Sea Society of South Korea, and edited and published the fifth collection of papers for governmental departments and the Law of the Sea Society. This collection of papers has built a broad platform for government departments and scholars to exchange views on law of the sea issues, and has successfully completed its work in 2010.

The conference invited relevant experts to make special reports on the international maritime situation in 2010, the maritime situation around China, the law enforcement work of the Marine Surveillance in safeguarding the rights and cruises, and the trial of cases before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. Participating experts and scholars carried out extensive exchanges and discussions on the law of the sea issues of current concern. The delegates were of the view that in recent years, China's ocean affairs have been steadily advancing, its ability to participate in multilateral and bilateral ocean affairs has been increasing, the construction of maritime law enforcement teams has been gradually improved, and the research on the legal system of the oceans and seas has been continuously deepened. Under the current good momentum of development of China's maritime affairs, China's maritime law community should strengthen exchanges and cooperation with relevant management departments and practical departments, further deepen the study of theoretical issues of the law of the sea, strengthen their own capacity building, and take more effective action through cross-strait cooperation to do their best scholars to safeguard China's maritime rights and interests.
