The State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) grants a patent application number and a check digit at the time of acceptance of a patent application. The check digit is located after the patent application number, and a subscripted single-byte solid dot symbol is used as a spacer between the patent application number and the check digit. Unless otherwise provided by laws, regulations and administrative rules, the patent application number and the check digit (including the spacer between them) shall be used in conjunction with each other in the various statutory procedures provided for in the Patent Law, the Rules for the Implementation of the Patent Law and other relevant regulations.

Usage Rule 2: Joint Use of Patent Application Number and China National Code CN The China National Code CN can be used jointly with the patent application number to indicate that the patent application is accepted by the State Intellectual Property Office of China. The code CN should be located before the patent application number, and if necessary, a 1-digit single-byte space can be used between CN and the patent application number.
