Our country’s court system is divided into four levels:

Supreme People’s Court: there is only one in the country;

Higher People’s Court: one for each province, autonomous region, and municipality;

Intermediate People's Court: one in each prefecture-level city, and multiple municipalities including maritime courts and railway courts;

Basic People's Court: one in each county-level unit.

The president of the court is equivalent to the deputy position of the head of the government at the same level. For example, the president of the provincial higher people's court is equivalent to the deputy ministerial level, and the intermediate people's court is equivalent to the deputy department level.

The levels from low to high are: Basic People's Court, Intermediate People's Court, Higher People's Court, and Supreme People's Court.
