Five of the six victims, including a pregnant woman, were dead by the time police arrived to rescue them. The young woman who survived was seriously injured. They were all members of the same family that lived in the house.
According to eyewitnesses, the perpetrator started at the first scene, victimizing the four victims. He then entered the old house, which was on fire on the second floor, and then rode his bicycle downstairs to the second scene, where he attacked two other victims, the perpetrator being the family's son-in-law, He Xuelong. Police identified He Xuelong's relationship to the victims as He Xuelong's mother-in-law, He Xuelong's wife's aunt and uncle, and He Xuelong's wife's two sisters.
Witnesses said he saw Xuelong submit to the crime all the way to the south of the village Rutang River jumped into the water, he Xuelong jumped into the river, and if he had been north, could have reached the other side of the North Stone Harbor in the village of Nanshan. It is therefore likely that He Xuelong has escaped the police.
Police returned to the scene of the crime, and technicians made several efforts but found no traces that could be utilized, and He Xuelong set fire to the scene, which has been burned down. After peripheral explorations, in 1993, Yang's family took in a homeless man named Xiao Chen, who was actually Yang Huiming. At the time, Yang's son-in-law had just died, and raising three children wasn't easy, so Yang's parents decided to let Chen stay with the family. The police produced a photo of He Xuelong, and the old village clerk recognized him as Yang Huiming. But he left the Yang family.
He Xuelong has been without a household registration since he came to the Yang family under the alias of Chen Jr. In 2013, the Yang family's daughter, with whom He Xuelong lived, died. Before she died, she asked her child to apply for a hukou with Uncle Chen.
