"Soaked three times in clear water, bathed three times in blood, and boiled three times in alkaline water. " A. Tolstoy, in the inscription of the second part of The Course of Suffering, 1918, had used such words to graphically illustrate the arduousness of the ideological transformation of the old intellectuals. However, these words should be recognized as enlightening for me and my contemporaries, who had received feudal and bourgeois culture alive and well. So, I had a thought: I want to write a book. This "book" will depict a young man from a bourgeois family, who even once had a hazy idea of bourgeois humanism and democratism, and who, through a "course of suffering," eventually became a believer in Marxism.

This "book", under the general title "Revelations of a Materialist", is not exactly a "book". It is not "a book," exactly, but a series of nine "middle books" under this general title. The Green Tree, which is now presented to the reader, is one of them.
