The Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index (SSE, SSE Composite, SSE Composite, Shanghai Composite, or HSI) is a statistical indicator in China that reflects the overall trend of stocks listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The SSE Index was initially compiled by the Jing'an Securities Department of the Trust and Investment Company of the Shanghai Branch of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) on July 15, 1991, based on the actual situation of the Shanghai stock market and with reference to the methodology of generating foreign stock price indicators. On February 21, 1992, SSE A-share index and SSE B-share index were added, and on June 1, 1993, SSE classified indexes were added, namely, industrial index, commercial index, real estate index, public utilities index, and general industry index to reflect the respective trends of stocks in different industries.
The new SSE Composite Index was released on December 30, 2005, with the market value of all stocks in the sample on that day as the base period and a base point of 1,000 points. The new SSE Composite Index is referred to as the "New Composite Index" and the index code is 000017.
The "New Composite Index" currently consists of all G-shares in the Shanghai market. Thereafter, stocks that have implemented the equity distribution reform will be included in the index on the second trading day after the implementation of the program. The index is weighted by total share capital.
Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) announced that it will release the new SSE Composite Index on the first trading day of 2006 to meet market demand in line with the equity separation reform.
The new SSE Composite Index is an index issued by an authoritative organization in China's securities market to reflect the company profiles after the implementation of the equity separation reform, and new sample stocks will be added to the new SSE Composite Index continuously as the equity separation reform is in full progress. In the near future, as most of the listed companies in the market have completed the share reform. The new SSE Composite Index will gradually become the core index that dominates the market.
