Zhengzhou City is the capital of Henan Province in China, and as a prefecture-level city is one of the eight ancient capitals of China, a national historical and cultural city, China's national central city and an important national comprehensive transportation hub. Zhengzhou is located in the north-central part of Henan Province, on the lower reaches of the Yellow River.

It now has six municipal districts, five county-level cities and one county under its jurisdiction. The city has a total area of 7,567.18 square kilometers, of which the urban area is 1,078.07 square kilometers, and in 2012, the urban built-up area was 373 square kilometers. In 2017, the city's resident population was 9,882,000, of which the urban area's resident population was 4,800,000.

The city's population is estimated to be about 1.8 million. Residents are predominantly Han Chinese, and their native language is the Zhengzhou dialect of the Central Plains Official Language.

The prefecture-level city area of Zhengzhou was once the site of the government or capital of some of the periods of these tribal alliances or states, including the state of Youxiong[note 4] led by the Xuan Yuan clan[note 3], the founder of the Chinese humanities,[note 4] who was born in Xinzheng[note 2], as well as the Xia Dynasty, the Shang Dynasty, the Guan State, the Zheng State, and the Republic of Korea, and thus is listed as one of the eight ancient capital districts of China.

The core area of Zhengzhou City also has a long history. As adopted from the Zhengzhou Mall ruins, Zhengzhou has a history of more than 3,600 years of urban construction. Archaeologists in 1995 in the northern suburbs of Zhengzhou, Mangling remnants of the discovery of the ancient city site of Xishan and the Zhengzhou region of the emergence of cities in the late Yangshao culture about 5300 years ago, is regarded as the source of China's urban civilization.
