The Capital Institute of Pediatrics, as the first pediatric medical research institute in new China, was formerly known as the Institute of Pediatrics of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and was founded in 1958. 1983 it came under the jurisdiction of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Health, and was formally renamed as the Capital Institute of Pediatrics, and the Affiliated Children's Hospital was officially established in 1986.

The Affiliated Children's Hospital is a Grade 3A hospital, which is a public non-profit medical institution, and is a pediatric medical institution integrating basic pediatric research, clinic, higher education, and preventive health care. It is the authorization point for doctoral and master's degree in pediatrics jointly declared by Peking Union Medical College; the authorization point for master's degree in the first level discipline of clinical medicine approved by the Academic Degrees Office of the State Council; and the teaching hospital of Peking University School of Medicine.

The Institute has 11 basic research laboratories, a big data center for children's health and an experimental center, and two Beijing Key Laboratories of Child Development and Nutrigenomics and Child Viral Pathogenesis.
