Shanghai Higher Institute of Tourism was founded in 1979, is China's first independent tourism higher education institutions, was subordinate to the former National Tourism Administration, by the Shanghai Municipal Government in 2000.
Approved by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government in August 2003, Shanghai Tourism College merged with the School of City and Tourism of Shanghai Normal University to form the School of Tourism of Shanghai Normal University, which provides academic education at all levels, from specialization to master's degree.
At the same time, Shanghai Tourism College of Higher Education remained as an independent legal entity to carry out specialized education. 2011, the school successfully passed the acceptance of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance's National Demonstration Higher Vocational Institutions Construction Program and became the only national demonstration higher vocational institution of tourism in China.
