The Historical Evolution of Turgat Port

turgat port borders Nalun prefecture of Kyrgyzstan and is located in Tuoyun township, Wuqia county, our state. Located at 75 23' east longitude, 4 3' north latitude and 3,795 meters above sea level, it is an important post station on the Silk Road in Han Dynasty, but it started as a trading port for two sovereign countries in 1881. In 196 (thirty-two years of Guangxu reign), China-Russia Yunsheng Bank borrowed 2 million rubles to build a road from the border pass of Turgat to Kashgar. Since then, this passage has played an important role in promoting non-governmental trade and friendly exchanges between China and the Soviet Union. On February 19th, 1952, due to traffic reasons, the postal exchange between China and the Soviet Union was changed from Shitan, Ilg to Turgat. The first trade between China and the Soviet Union at this port began in 1951, and the import and export goods mainly included oil, fertilizer, mineral products, textiles, livestock products and local products. Later, due to political factors, the port was closed in 1969. On December 23rd, 1983, the port was reopened.

turgat port used to have such names as "tulugarte", "turgott" and "tuoyun", and it was renamed as "turgat port" with the approval of the State Council in 1985. The port is cold all year round, windy and oxygen-deficient, with an oxygen concentration of 69% and a frost-free period of only 13 days. It was listed as a special hardship area by the state, and then moved to Topa with the approval of the State Council and the autonomous region (still using the name of Turgat Port), which is 11 kilometers away from the original Turgat, 2, meters above sea level, 62 kilometers away from atushi and 57 kilometers away from Kashgar.
