The first time our country used the Internet was on September 20, 1987. On this day, a professor from the Beijing Institute of Computer Applications who implemented the international networking project CANET (Chinese Academic Network) sent my country's first email, marking the beginning of Chinese people's use of the Internet. In December 1988, the Tsinghua University campus network adopted an email software package using the X400 protocol introduced from the University of British Columbia in Canada. It was connected to the University of British Columbia in Canada through the X.25 network and opened an email application. In October 1990, my country registered the top-level domain name CN with DDN-NIC, the predecessor of the International Internet Network Information Center, and has since opened international email services using China's top-level domain name CN. On March 2, 1993, the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences leased AT&T's international satellite channel to connect to the 64K dedicated line of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in the United States. This is the first dedicated line partially connected to the Internet in my country. In December 1993, the State Planning Commission organized the completion of the backbone network project of the Zhongguancun Education and Scientific Research Demonstration Network (NCFC), a World Bank loan project, using high-speed optical cables and routers to realize network interconnection between Peking University, Tsinghua University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. even. In January 1994, the National Science Foundation agreed to NCFC's request to formally access the Internet. In March 1994, a 64Kbps dedicated line was opened and tested. On April 20, 1994, the NCFC project opened a 64K international dedicated line connected to the Internet through the American Sprint Company, realizing a full-function connection with the Internet. Since then, our country has been officially recognized internationally as a country with Internet.

Since then, China's Internet has begun a period of rapid development. In July 1995, the 128K international dedicated line connecting China Education and Scientific Research Network (CERNET) to the United States was opened. In January 1996, the China Public Computer Internet (CHINANET) national backbone network was completed and officially opened, and the nationwide public computer Internet network began to provide services. On September 6, 1996, the 256K dedicated line connecting China Jinqiao Information Network (CHINAGBN) to the United States was officially opened. China Jinqiao Information Network began to provide Internet services. By December 1996, about 100,000 people in our country began to use the Internet.

In November 1997, the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) released the first "Statistical Report on the Development of China's Internet". As of October 31, 1997, my country had 299,000 computers with Internet access, 620,000 Internet users, 4,066 domain names registered under CN, 1,500 WWW sites, and an international export bandwidth of 18.64Mbps.

In 1997, China Public Computer Internet (CHINANET) realized integration with China’s other three Internet networks, namely China Science and Technology Network (CSTNET), China Education and Scientific Research Computer Network (CERNET), and China Golden Bridge Information Network (CHINAGBN). ) interconnection.

In July 1998, the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) released the second "Statistical Report on the Development of China's Internet". As of June 30, 1998, there were 542,000 computers with Internet access in my country, 1.175 million Internet users, 9,415 domain names registered under CN, 3,700 WWW sites, and international export bandwidth of 84.64Mbps.

In July 1998, the second phase of the China Public Computer Internet (CHINANET) backbone network project was launched. The second phase of the project will expand the backbone bandwidth of eight large areas to 155M, and replace all node routers in eight large areas with gigabit routers.

In January 1999, the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) released the third "Statistical Report on the Development of China's Internet". As of December 31, 1998, my country had 747,000 computers with Internet access, 2.1 million Internet users, 18,396 domain names registered under CN, 5,300 WWW sites, and an international export bandwidth of 143M256K.

In July 1999, the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) released the fourth "Statistical Report on the Development of China's Internet". As of June 31, 1999, the number of computers with Internet access in my country was 1.46 million, including 250,000 dedicated line Internet computers and 1.21 million dial-up Internet computers; the number of Internet users was 4 million, of which the number of dedicated line Internet users was approximately 760,000, the number of dial-up Internet users is about 2.56 million, and the number of users of both is 680,000. There are 29,045 domain names registered under CN, approximately 9,906 WWW sites, and the total capacity of international lines is 241M.
